Emily Smith creates installations that examine how and where nature and the built environment collide, merge and overlap. She is fascinated by the interstice between nature and artifice and believes her work exists within that space. She asks, in a city like Los Angeles, what is nature and our relationship to it? How do we perceive it? Smith is interested in how our relationships to these spaces change over time and how we might envision these environments in the not-so-distant future. For this show she is incorporating imagery taken from her commutes down Venice Blvd and from her backyard.
