Elsa Rady

Elsa Rady was born in New -York City, 1943, and recently passed away on February 2011. Recognized as one of the most important and respected ceramic artists in the United States, she has been defined by her unique mix of modernist tradition with post-modern questions. She has exhibited in solos and groups shows around the world, while her work is part of the collection of major museums (LACMA, etc.). She is the recipient of a Fellowship Grant, National Endowment for the Arts.

"The sleek, unadorned shapes and disciplined, symmetrical proportion of her ceramic pieces echoe the celebrated achievements of her European predecessors, while presenting a new and personal vision. 'Less is more', the concept defining modernism, is the moto behind her work.(...) In their singular intensity, Rady's ceramic porcelains are pure and autonomous, unfettered but they vicissitudes of daily life, and therefore quintessentially modern. They epitomize art for art's shake. To be sure, her passion for form is genuine and joyfully indulged for its aesthetic pleasure, yet Rady's work reveals and even greater complexity, which underlines the intricate relationship between modernism and postmodernism.

She insists on controlling the presentation in a way unthinkable in traditional ceramics, and in so doing, dismantles the distinction between fine and industrial arts. Rady reorders the art hierarchy by inviting multiple readings of her work. "Is it art of craft?' 'Is it functional or non-functional'? 'Is it formal or conceptual?' one asks".

"Elsa Rady is one the best artists I have ever known" Larry Bell.
